Children don’t always eat the most nutritious foods

There I am making the most delicious meal and off he goes getting a cookie from grandpa’s hidden stash. My son is 3 years old and still wants help with feeding most meals. I asked him the other day “when you go to kindergarten who will help you at school?” and he simply answers “my teacher.” Here I am a Registered Holistic Nutritionist™ trying to teach my child what foods are nutritious and how eat independently. I have failed at both of these task. My child eats more cookies and junk food then wholesome nutritious foods. I have urged my family members to stop bringing in junk food items into the house, however, the weekly Costco run does not help this situation.
The main problem
My son is a picky eater. He loves fries and chicken nuggets. He hates pizza. Who hates pizza? Well my son does. He will eat rice with ketchup. What in the world is my son eating? rice and ketchup? I hate that we even have ketchup in the house, however, we need it for fries and when grandpa wants to make his delicious sweet and sour chicken. On the other hand, my daughter is an amazing eater and eats a variety of wholesome foods in her diet. She is quite an adventurous eater and is not afraid to try anything. Her upbringing was not very different from my son, however, it does come down to their individual personalities and preferences.
My approach
Our family aims to make fruit the main snack choice at my household. My husband loves buying exotic fruits. Just the other day he brings home a entire case of pitaya/dragon fruit; super delicious fruit high in vitamin C and antioxidants. Vitamin C and antioxidants are excellent way to keep up our immune system. Fruit is always easy to purchase at our local store or farmers market.
My son loves smoothies. I add spinach/kale, hemp hearts/chai seeds, a bit of protein powder, and a little bit of greens boosting powder. He doesn’t even notice that these items have been added to his smoothie. Yes! he’s getting his greens and getting extra nutrients at the same time. Score! I love the idea of smoothies because they are easy to make and hardly any mess thanks to our magic bullet.
